لمّا كان الغزالي مفكّرًا مسبوقًا بمفكّرين آخرين أثّروا فيه بدت مهمّة إعادة بناء فكره لا تستغني عن ربطه بما سبقه من اتّجاهات فكريّة وثقافيّة. وقد استحضر في هذا الكتاب الموقف الفلسفي اليوناني والموقف الفلسفي العربي والكلامي بشقّيه المعتزلي والأشعري وأحيانًا الحنبلي والشيعي. ذلك أنّ الغزالي تفاعل فكريًّا مع كلّ هذه التيّارات وجادلها وأفاد منها، وقدّم ما يمكن عدّه خلاصة سُنِّيَّة لها.
يحتوي هذا الكتاب على تمهيد وأربعة أبواب يشتمل كلّ منها على جملة فصول.
الباب الأوّل لدراسة رؤية العالم في الفكرين اليوناني والعربي وفي فكر الغزالي.
الباب الثاني لدراسة القضايا الإبستيمولوجيّة التي أثارتها مقاربة المتكلّمين والفلاسفة والغزالي لعالم الغيب.
الباب الثالث امتداد للباب الثاني، وكان السؤال المركزي: هل بالإمكان موضعة المفارق دون المساس بحقيقة كونه مفارقًا؟
الباب الرابع للنظر في صلة الغيب بالشهادة، مع عدم التعرّض للجانب السياسي من مشروع الغزالي.
