يقود حل العديد من مسائل الفيزياء النظرية والرياضية المرتبطة مثلاً بعمليات إنتشار الأمواج الكهرومغناطيسية والصوتية والنقل الحراري وتعيين الطيف الطاقي لجملة ذرية أو نووية، إلى إستخدام التوابع الخاصة، أن أكثر هذه التوابع إستخداماً هي توابع بيسيل الإسطوانية والكروية على إختلاف أنواعها وكثيرات حدود ليجاندر وارميت ولاغير والتوابع ما فوق الهندسية وتابعاً دلتا وغاما، تشكل دراسة هذه التوابع جوهر الكتاب المطروح بين يدي القارئ.
إن هذا المؤلف هو ثمرة لقيام المؤلف بتدريس مقرّر التوابع الخاصة لسنوات عديدة لطلبة الفيزياء في كل من جامعتي الحديدة وذمار في الجمهورية اليمنية، وإستناداً إلى بعض المراجع العالمية الشهيرة في هذا المضمار.
انحصر الهدف من تدريس هذا المقرّر في إستعراض الطرائق الرياضية التي لا غنى عنها لتدريس فروع الفيزياء المختلفة، خاصة النظرية منها - النظرية الكهرومغناطيسية والميكانيك الكوانتي والفيزياء النووية، هدفها تمهيد الطريق للطلبة ومساعدتهم على فهم وإستيعاب المقررات الفيزيائية اللاحقة بطريقة أيسر.
