تمثل التأثيرات الكهرومغناطيسية بين الشحنات الكهربائية (متحركة أم ساكنة) أحد أهم التأثيرات الأساسية الأربع الموجودة في الطبيعة، إنها المسؤولة عمن تماسك الذرات، ومن ثم تماسك الجزيئات والمادة والأجسام الجهرية التي هي في التحليل الأخير مؤلفة من الذرات، تتألف الذرة بدورها من نواة ثقيلة موجبة الشحنة والكترونات خفيفة سالبة الشحنة، الذرة في الحالة الطبيعية معتدلة كهربائياً، ذلك أن عدد الإلكترونات المتحركة في حقل نواتها مساو لعدد البروتونات (موجبة الشحنة) الموجودة داخل الأخيرة.
يدخل في تركيب ذرات بعض العناصر الكيميائية عدد معين من الإلكترونات ضعيفة الإرتباط بالنوى الذرية، ومن ثم يمكن فصلها، ولذا فهي المسؤولة عن النشاط الكيميائي للذرة وللعنصر الموافق، إذا ما تحركت هذه الإلكترونات شبه الطليقة حركة موجهة (تحت تأثير حقل كهربائي خارجي)، فإنها تولد تياراً كهربائياً، يولد هذا الأخير بدوره حقلاً مغناطيسياً، مثلما تولد الشحنات الكهربائية الساكنة حقولاً كهربائية في الفضاء المحيط بها، كما أن الحقل الكهربائي المتغير مع الزمن يولد حقلاً مغناطيسياً، وإذا كان هذا الأخير بدوره متغيراً مع الزمن، فإنه يولد حقلاً كهربائياً، وهكذا دواليك، إن هذا هو مبدأ الحصول على الأمواج الكهرومغناطيسية.
يمثل حل مسائل الكهرباء والمغناطيسية، شأنها في ذلك شأن أي فرع من فروع الفيزياء المختلفة، خطوة هامة على طريق فهم قوانين هذا العلم الواسع وسبر أعماقه وإستشفاف آفاق تطبيقاته العملية في كافة فروع العلم والتكنولوجيا.
