"أكملت سيرها إلى حيث قادتها قدماها. الزقاق... "باتيسري شانتال" وجدت المخبز مغلقاً، فصعدت الدرجات إلى الطابق الثاني حيث شقتها. قرعت الجرس وانتظرت حتى فتحت شانتال الباب، رحبت بها مبدية تعجباً واضحاً من المفاجأة، أخيراً تذكرت. اقتادتها إلى غرفة الجلوس. تناولت إبريق القهوة الجاهزة في إبريقها الخاص وصبّت لها فنجاناً قدمته لها والحزن يتدفق من عبارتها: أنا آسفة حقاً لانفصالكما! كنتما متجانسين! تذكرين ليلة رأس السنة..؟ هزت رأسها هزته المعتادة وتمتمت؛ كان ذلك منذ زمن مضى... قصة وانتهت... أنا هنا لأودعك. قفزت الدهشة من عيني شانتال مستفهمة، تودعيني؟ أين سترحلين؟ قالت: ربما إلى الجنوب، ربما أعود إلى بلادي... لست أدري. قاطعتها: ولكن أين هي بلادك؟ وقع السؤال وقعاً مميتاً على مسامعها. كل هذا الزمن وشانتال تجهل أين بلادها! بلادها التي احتلت محور الأحداث! استحوذت على "مانشتات" الصحف العريضة، تصدرت نشرات الأخبار".
تدور أحداث تلك الرواية بين العراق وفرنسا، بين الشرق والغرب، وذاك أعطى بعداً رمزياً لتلك الرواية التي تروي تجربة "شجن أيوب" الصحفية الشخصية المحورية للقصة التي ترحل من وطنها وراء فرصة عمل في صحيفة عربية تصدر من فرنسا تتناوب الأحداث على تلك الرواية منتزعة صوراً ومشاهد للحرب الغربية التي شنت على العراق بعشوائية جرفت معها الشجر والحجر وقبل شيء الإنسان. تعيش شجن قصة عاطفية تنتهي بالفشل، وبقرار تتخذه في العودة إلى بلادها.
