(من الأفكار التي عذبت الإنسانية باستمرار فكرة الموت وانتهاء الحياة، فكل إنسان -عدا المؤمن- يسأل نفسه: لماذا جئت إلى الدنيا؟ ولماذا أذهب؟ وما هو الهدف من هذا البناء وهذا الهدم؟ أليس هذا العمل لغواً لا فائدة منه؟
فالخوف من الموت والنوفور منه كان إحدى العلل الدافعة نحو تكوين الفلسفة المتشائمة، والفلاسفة المتشائمون يتصورون الحياة والوجود بلا هدف، وخالية من الفائدة، وعارية عن الحكمة وقد أوقعهم هذا التصور في لجج الحيرة والاضطراب، وأحياناً ألقى في أعماقهم فكرة الانتحار.
إن النفور من الموت من مختصات الإنسان، فالحيوانات لا تفكر في الموت، وما يوجد فيها إنما هو فقط غريزة الفرار من الخطر والرغبة في حفظ الحياة الحاضرة، ومن الواضح أن الرغبة في البقاء بمعنى حفظ الحياة الحاضرة لازمها مطلق الحياة، ولكن الإنسان بالإضافة إلى هذا فهو يطمح إلى المستقبل وإلى البقاء فيه.
وبعبارة أخرى، فإن الإنسان له الأمل في الخلود وهذا من مختصاته، والأمل فرع لتصور المستقبل، والأمل في الخلود فرع الفكرة الأبدية، وهذا التفكير والتصور من مختصات الإنسان. فالنفور من الموت إذن وليد الرغبة في الخلود، وبما أ،ه لا يوجد في الطبيعة رغبة لا هدف منها فتستطيع حينئذ أخذ هذه الرغبة دليلاً على بقاء الإنسان بعد الموت.
وبما أننا نتعذب من فكرة العدم، فهذا بنفسه دليل على أننا سوف لن ننعدم، فلو كنا مثل الأزهار والنباتات نعيش حياة مؤقتة ومحدودة لم توجد في أعماقنا الرغبة في الخلود بصورة رغبة أصلة).
انطلاقاً من هنا فقد سعى "أبو يوسف الغراوي" إلى إيراد وتثبيت ما وقع في يديه منها على كثرتها ورغم تعارض نصوص بعضها، وعدم قوة سند البعض الآخر ظاهراً، لتطلب طبيعة البحث ذلك، لأأن غرضه من إعداد هذا البحث، هو ممازجة تلك الأخبار والروايات ورد بعضها إلى بعض، وإخراج الحقيقة أو الوصول إلى النتيجة الصحيحة، أو ما هو أقرب للصواب من بينها على شكل حقائق أو نتائج أو احتمالات أو فرضيات مقبولة عقلاً على أقل تقدير.
