يُذْكَرُ أبو الريحان البيروني فيرد في الخاطر، كتاب "الآثار الباقية من القرون الخالية" لأنه نم كتب التراث العربي ذات الغنى الفكري والمعرفي، الذي نال تقدير الأجانب قبل الأقارب، لمحتواه الثري وإجتهاد مؤلفه في الخوض في علم يحتاج إلى دربة ودراية واسعة الإطلاع ما يدلنا عليه قوله في ختام كتابه: (وقد تمّ المجازُ الموعود والوفاء بالمضمون وإستيفاء الأقْسام الّتي اشتمل عليها سؤال السائلين على قدر ما أوتيت من الإستطاعة، فكل امرئ يعمل على شاكلته، وقيمةُ كلّ منهم ما يُحْسن، وأظنّ أنّ فيما صحّحُته من الأصول كفايةً لتلقيح العقول، وهدايةً إلى تهذيب النَّظر في أوائل أحوال البَشَر، وجِلاء للشكوك في تواريخ الأنبياء والملوك، وإرشاداً للحيارى من اليهود والنصارى فيما هم عليه، والناظرُ فيه لا يخلو من أن يكون مثلي، فيَحْمَدُني ويشكر فعلي فيما سعيت فيه، أو يكون لمرتبته مزيّةٌ على مرتبتي، فيَتفضَلُ بإصلاح الخَلَل، ويَعْذِرُ فيما عساه وقع من الزَّلل).
وهذا شأن العلماء المخلصين الصادقين علم وفير وتواضع منقطع النظير.
عملنا في الكتاب، ولأهمية هذا الأثر الخالد من تراثنا العربي، ولندرة نسخه في المكتبات، قمنا بإخراج هذا الكتاب من بين رفوف المكتبات وإظهاره للنور، فقمنا بتحقيق هذا الكتاب على مخطوطة تعود لتاريخ للقرن الثالث عشر للهجري من مكتبة باريس الوطنية ومتطابقتها مع النص الموجود وقمنا العمل على نسخة مطبوعة عام 1880 تحقيق س. إدوارد وقمنا مطابقة النسخ وذكر الإختلاف بينها في الحواشي السفلية فحرف P تعني النسخة الوطنية في باريس وحرف L النسخة الموجودة في المتحف البريطاني في لندن وحرف R نسخة السيد هنري رولينسون وكلمة MSS تعني جميع النسخ.
