كان للمحدثين الأوائل طرقهم في جمع الحديث الشريف وتدوينهم وإحدى هذه الطرق، ما يسميه علماء الحديث بالأمالي، حيث يقعد الشيخ في مجلس يتحدث بما يرويه من الأحاديث والروايات والتلاميذ من حوله يسمعون منه ويسجلون ما يمليه عليهم ومن تبعهم من المحدثين. والمجالس الإملاء آداب يحرص المحدثون والتلاميذ على التزام بها، كالطهارة والتطيب وافتتاح الكلام بحمد الله تعالى والصلاة على بنيه الكريم، والجلوس بهيبة ووقار، ومراعاة أسماع جميع الحاضرين.
ومن الأمالي التي اشتهرت وذاع صيتها أمالي "أبي الحسين محمد بن أحمد بن سمعون" حيث حرص "أبو الحسين" على رواية الأحاديث المسندة التي يرويها المصنف بإسناده إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم . كما روى بعض الموقوفات والمقطوعات.
وقد اعتمد المحقق في تحقيق أمالي "أبي الحسين"على نسخة كاملة ونسخ ناقصة. الأولى كتبها ورواها الإمام "أبو الحسن العطار" بسنده إلى أبي طالب العشاري عن ابن سمعون به. وقد نسخ الكتاب على النسخة الكاملة من رواية أبي طالب العشاري، وقابل المنسوخ بالأصل كما قابل بين المنسوخ والنسخ الأخرى، كما خدم النص بضبطه وتشكيله وترقيمه وتنظيم فقراته، وترجم للأعلام الذين يحتاجون إلى ترجمة، كما خرج الأحاديث والآثار وعزا الآيات إلى موضعها في المصحف ووضع فهارس تكشف عن النص وتوضيحه.
