لا شكّ أن الحضارة الإسلامية تعتبر من أعظم الحضارات التي شهدها العالم على مرّ التاريخ، فلم تقدم أي حضارة من الحضارات ما قدمته الحضارة الإسلامية للإنسانية والعالم علماً وعلماء.
فقد أغنت العالم في شتى العلوم والفنون فلم يكن لها منافس طيلة فترة إزدهارها وخاصةً في القرن الثالث الهجري الذي عاش فيه أبو عثمان عمرو بن بحر والذي شهد ظهور الكثير من العلماء والأدباء والمفكرين والفلاسفة ما لا يحصى عددهم والذين تخرجوا من مدارس بغداد عاصمة الخلافة العباسية ورفدوا العالم بكل أنواع الثقافات والمجالات العلمية والفكرية.
وتكمن أهمية هذا الكتاب "تنبيه الملوك والمكايد" أنه منسوب لأبرز أديب عرفه العصر العباسي الثاني، وهو الجاحظ الذي كان بحق سيد أدباء عصره، ودراسة حياة هذا الأديب من الأهمية للتعرّف على فكره وأدبه وعصره الذي عاش فيه، وحياته المليئة بالعطاء والإنتاج.
وتأتي أهمية البحث كذلك من الناحية التاريخية، فهي ثنايا المخطوط معلومات مهمة جداً، وكثيرة، وشاملة تخص حياة الملوك والخلفاء، والأمراء، والوزراء، وما حدث لهم من مكائد وحيل أدت إلى زوال ملكهم، أو قتلهم، وسيطرة أندادهم عليهم بما استعملوه من المكائد المحمودة منها أو المذمومة على السواء.
وكذلك تأتي أهمية البحث في الحقبة التاريخية الطويلة التي سردها المؤلف إبتداءً من عصر ما قبل الإسلام ومروراً بالعصر الأموي ثم العباسي الأول والثاني.
