محمد محفوظ (1340 - 1408 هـ = 1921 - 1988 م)
• أديب، كاتب، مؤرّخ.
• كان تعليمه الأساسي زيتونيا، وثقافته عربية اللسان أصلا، مع لسان فرنسي لم يحمل فيه غير الشهادة الابتدائية، إلا أنها كانت كافية ليفتح بها لنفسه باب الدخول للثقافة الفرنسية وما كتبه المؤرخون وأهل الاستشراق.
• وهو أحد أدباء صفاقس البارزين، كرّس معظم جهده الفكري في التعريف بالمفكرين التونسيين من خلال عروضه وتحقيقه لنتاجاتهم الفكرية، حتى وصفت أعماله بأنها مراجع علمية أساسية. وقد ألّف في هذا الصدد كتابا بعنوان (تراجم المؤلفين التونسيين) الذي صدر في خمسة أجزاء عن دار الغرب الإسلامي عام 1402 هـ.
وكان على وشك إصدار عدة مخطوطات أخرى في هذا الصدد قبل أن تحضره المنيّة. ومن المنتظر أن تصدر هذه الأعمال بالتعاون بين اتحاد الكتاب التونسيين ووزارة الشؤون الثقافية التونسية.
• توفي ليلة السابع من يونيو (حزيران) (1).

الكتاب الذي بين يديك - عزيزي القارئ - هو محاولة أرجو أن تكون جادة لبناء تفسير علمي - موضوعي لظواهر العنف والطائفية التي برزت في المشهد العربي، ونرجو أن يكون هذا الكتاب، إضافة فكرية وثقافية جادة، لمعالجة ظواهر العنف والطائفية في المنطقة العربية. لأننا نعتقد أن استيطان هذه الظواهر في الاجتماع العربي المعاصر، سيضيع على المنطقة العربية فرصة التحول الديمقراطي الذي يستهدف بناء حياة سياسية جديدة في المنطقة العربية خالية من العنف الذي يدمر كل مكسب ويحّول السياسة إلى فضاء لممارسة التوحش بكل صنوفه.
