يسرد هذا الكتاب قصة " الناصر لدين الله " وهو عبد الرحمن الناصر أو عبد الرحمن الثالث أول خليفة في الأندلس أطلق عليه إسم أمير المؤمنين ، ولقبه الناصر لدين الله ، والناصر هذا هو الذروة العليا في ملوك بني أمية ، دخل الحكم فوجد مملكة مقسمة بين أسياد لا تربطهم عروة ولا يجمع بينهم عرق ، معرضين في كل حين لغزوات الإفرنج ، وجشع ملوك ليون ونباره ، فأنقذ الأندلس من انشقاقاته الداخلية ومن طمع الأجانب ، ونشر السلام والعدل في المملكة ، وملأ بيت المال بعد أن كان فارغاً . اهتم بالزراعة والصناعة والتجارة والفنون وجعلها في أعلى مستوى ، فكان السائح يشاهد أعمال الري والأبنية الفخمة والحمامات النظيفة ، ويُدهش لرخص الأسعار ولنظافة اللباس ولرفاهية الناس ، ووصل عدد سكان قرطبة في عهده إلى مليون ساكن ، فضلاً عن ثلاثة آلاف جامع وثلاثمائة حمام عام ومائة وخمسين ألف منزل وثمانية وعشرين ( ربضاً ) أي مأوى للغنم والدواب . وكان أن خلّف أسطولاً ضخماً نافس أسطول الفاطميين في السيطرة على البحر المتوسط ، وجيشاً من أكثر الجيوش نظاماً وعدة وأجمل جيش في العالم بشهادة الراهب يوحنا دي غورتز ، وتغلب على الملوك المسيحيين في الشمال الذين هادنوه ، وأما ملوك أوروبا فكانوا يطلبون رضاه ، واقتدى به الحكام حتى كان مثالاً لهم .
