يعالج هذا الكتاب موضوعات حيوية من مشاكل الصحة النفسية والتكيف النفسي وأساليب الوقاية من الإضطرابات النفسية وخاصة إضطرابات النوم ومن بينها ظاهرة الأرق أو السهاد وكثرة النوم وضيق النفس وما إلى ذلك.
والحقيقة أن موضوع الأحلام ما يزال عصياً على العلم والبحث التجريبي ذلك لأنه تجربة ذاتية فردية لا يشارك الحالم في حلمه أحد ولا يمكن الباحث أن يتحقق من صحة حلم شخص آخر؛ كذلك لا يستطيع العلماء أن يضعوا أيديهم على العوامل السببية المؤثرة في الأحلام ومعرفة ما يعرف باسم محتوى الحلم الظاهر ومحتواه الباطن أو الكامن أو الضمني أو المستتر.
كذلك ما يزال العلماء يسعون لمعرفة معنى الرموز التي ترد في حلم الحالم ذلك لأن الأحداث لا تقع في الحلم بصورة علنية سافرة مكشوفة وإنما تحدث بصورة رمزية أو مقنعة أو مستترة أو خفية.
وهناك وظائف كثيرة للحلم منها أنه تحقيق لرغبات مكبوتة أو أنه حراسة للنوم أو أنه إنذار بوقوع ضرر ما على صاحبه حتى يأخذ حذره ويحتاط أو أنه ضرب من ضروب عقاب الذات حيث يرى النائم إنزال العقاب عليه وهكذا ويصاحب الأحلام ظواهر أخرى مثل المشي أثناء النوم أو الكلام أثناء النوم.
