آمن الإنسان منذ فجر التاريخ بمقدرة الأحلام على التكهن؛ ففي العهد الأغريقي كان الإعتقاد السائد أن الأحلام رسائل موجهة من الآلهة من الواجب دراستها وتصنيفها وتأويلها، وعندما يستعصي تفسيرها على العرّافين لا بد عندئذ من اللجوء إلى الوسطاء الذين من خلالهم فقط يجيب الآله عن سؤال حول أمر من أمور الغيب.
أما في أيامنا هذه، فإن الإحلام فقدت الكثير من الهالة السحرية التي كانت تحيط بها لأنه أصبح من الممكن دراستها بطرق أكثر موضوعية بفضل الأبحاث التي أجريت في المائة سنة الأخيرة حول حالة اللاوعي عند الإنسان، وبفضل النظريات التي وضعها فرويد؛ فالتخيلات الليلية كما يقول فرويد ما هي إلا تعبير عن الرغبات، والقلق والوساوس القابعة في مناطق اللاوعي من كياننا النفسي.
إن كل ما تخشاه نفوسنا أو ترفضه وهي في حالة الوعي، يفلت من قبضتها في حالة اللاوعي ويظهر في الأحلام محققاً في ذلك أمرين مهمين: يحررنا أولاً من الإنفعالات التي عانت من الكبت أثناء النهار، ومن ثم يشير بوضوح إلى نوع الصراعات التي تتأجج في داخلنا والتي غالباً ما تكون سبب الأمراض العصبية التي تفتك بنا.
إلا أنه من المهم النظر إلى كل هذه الأمور من خلال لغة الأرقام، وهي نوع من السرد التاريخي، له طبعاً منطقة الخاص به، ولكن من المفروض إخضاعه مسبقاً للدرس والتدقيق وحل الرموز كي يتسنى الكشف عن معناه الحقيقي، وهو ما توخاه هذا الكتاب لإعطاء فكرة واضحة وصحيحة عن أحلامك.
