يقف البردوني واحداً من أبرز شعراء اليمن في القرن العشرين، فقد حظي بشهرة واسعة في اليمن والوطن العربي، وذلك بسبب جرأته وسعيه إلى تجديد لغته وصوره ومضامين شعره، فأضاف إلى شعره ما يميزه من مظاهر الحداثة.
يشكل الحوار ظاهرة بارزة في شعر البردوني، بنوعيه الداخلي والخارجي، وبأسلوبية حديثة وتقنية خاصة، بل يمكن القول إن الحوار في شعره جاء بصورة تختلف عما كانت عليه عند الشعراء، فضلاً على إن هذا الحوار جاء ليعكس قضايا إجتماعية ووطنية، لهذا طغى عليه أسلوب السخرية في أغلب الأحيان، مقترباً من الواقع، فكان الحوار عنده يأخذ إتجاهين في التجديد في الشكل والمضمون.
إن مثل هذه الظاهرة وتقنياتها الحديثة كانت السبب الأساس في إختيار هذا الموضوع لرسالتي، فهي ظاهرة تطغى على شعر البردوني، كما إن قلة عناية الباحثين بهذه الظاهرة كان دافعاً آخر لإختيارها.
ولا ننسى ما لشخصية البردوني وشعره على نحو عام من دور في إختيار هذا الموضوع لرسالتي هذه، ولا سيما أنه الشاعر الذي مثل شعبه ومجتمعه قبل ان يمثل نفسه، وكافح من أجل مجتمعه قبل نفسه، فعانى ظروف وطنه وظروفه الخاصة وما صحبها من فقر ومرض وحرمان، فراح يعاني الإثنين معاً، فبدا غريباً في هذا الزمان الذي سماه زماناً بلا نوعية، فراح يرى كل شيء غريباً حتى أرض بلقيس فقرر أن يجوب العصور، وأن يسافر إلى الأيام الخضر، ليجد مدينة الغد، لقد مشى في طريق الفجر، لكنه عندما وصل إليها، لم يجد إلا كائنات من الشوق الآخر، فراح ينظر في مرايا الليل، ليرى نفسه، لكنه وجد وجوهاً دخانية تعاني ما يعانيه، هذا ما قاله في شعره شاكياً متألماً.
