يعتبر كتاب كامل الزيارات من أهم المصادر الروائية عند الشيعة الإمامية، وهو من أوثق المراجع في بابي الحديث والدعاء، وكان بمنظر ومرأى العلماء والفقهاء الشيعة على مدى ألف سنة منذ تأليفه حيث وردت روايات هذا الكتاب في أمهات كتب الشيعة، وهي من الروايات التي يستند إليها.
من خصائص هذا الكتاب أنّ ابن قولويه قام بتوثيق رواته، وعلى ما ادعى أنّه اختار أحاديثه من أصح وأوثق ما ورد في هذا المجال بحيث ما أورد فيه حديثاً شاذاً أو ضعيفاً، الأمر الذي يساعد علماء الشيعة على أن يعوّلوا، ويستندوا على تلك الرواة الذين لم يردوا في أشهر كتب علم الرجال، لكن ذكرهم ابن قولويه في أسانيد كتاب كامل الزيارات. ونظراً لصحة الأحاديث الواردة في هذا الكتاب خصوصاً، وأنها وردت عن طريق المصادر المعتبرة لأصحاب الأئمة (ع)، أصبح الكتاب مصدراً حديثياً من الدرجة الأولى للعلماء المتأخرين، فالشيخ الطوسي اعتمد عليه كمصدر لكتابه التهذيب، وإضافة إليه صار من أهم المصادر التي استفاد منها الشيخ عباس القمي في كتابه مفاتيح الجنان وخاصة فيما يتعلق بالأدعية والزيارات.
