تعيش أقليّات مجتمعاتنا، وخاصّةً المسيحيّة، على اختلاف انتماءاتهم الدينيّة أو العرقيّة، وخلفيّاتها الاجتماعيّة أو الثقافيّة، في شبه غربةٍ عن مُحيطها، وتأتي تهديدات الأكثريّات ولو على الصعيد النفسيّ وحده، لتزيد من هذه العزلة عزلةً. وما يُزيد الطين بلّة، "فشل الوصول إلى تعريف متّفق عليه لمصطلح الأقليّة في القانون الدوليّ". شجّع هذا الوضع الدول على أن تغضّ الطرف عن واقع الأقليّات فيها. وبين سندان محدوديّة الدور، ومطرقة اضطهادات البارحة واليوم، يترنّح مجتمعنا العربيّ في مكانه ولا يتقدّم قيد أُنملة نحو مواطنةٍ حقيقيّة. وإن هربت الأقليّات من واقعها في الوطن العربيّ، واجهت الأمر عينه في المجتمعات الغربيّة، وكأنّ قدرها أن تختبر الاغتراب داخل أوطانها وخارجها.
يطرح المؤلِّف، وهو الاختصاصيّ في حقوق الإنسان وتاريخيّتها، المشكلة على بِساط البحث عالميًّا، ليُسلّط الضوء بعدها على واقع مسيحيّي الشرق وخصوصيّته، وتأثير الموروث الدينيّ في عيشهم ووجودهم وهويّتهم في الماضي وفي الأوضاع الراهنة. كما يعرض الدكتور نائل جرجس الضمانات القانونيّة المختلفة لحقوق الإنسان بوجهٍ عامّ وحقوق الأقليّات المسيحيّة بوجهٍ خاصّ، وتأثير التشريعات الدينيّة، سواء الإسلاميّة أو المسيحيّة، في وضع حقوق الإنسان في المشرق العربيّ، وبالتالي يصل بنا إلى الأسباب المباشرة وغير المباشرة لأزمة المواطنة عند مسيحيّي المشرق.
يمثّل هذا الكتاب مرجعًا مهمًّا لكلّ من يسعى لأن يرسّخ وجوده في المشرق بمواطنيّة فعّالة تستند إلى حقوقه، وتشجّعه على القيام بواجباته ويندمج المواطن المسيحيّ بوجهٍ خاصّ في مجتمعه ودولته لا قسرياً بل طواعياً.
