وأذكر أنني أخبرتك في سالف الزمان أن لوبيا الجليلة، التي مر بها السيد المسيح كثيراً هي أمي التي أنجبني رحمها، ثم ماتت بعد مضي حفنة من السنين على ولادتي وتركتني شريداً في عالم من الصخور الصوانية والمعادن الفولاذية، وفي الحق أنها المكان الذي غادرته أنا منذ دهر، ولكن دون أن يغادره قلبي حتى الآن، ولن يغادره إلى أبد الآبدين، وأنه لعالم شرس، بل مفترس، ذاك الذي حرمني من مسقط رأسي طوال هذه المدة ومنحه للأغراب والمتطفلين.
أما دمشق التي كانت فاتنة في غابر الأعوام فهي أمي بالتبني، أمي التي أوتني وضمتني إلى صدرها الحنون، وأجلستني في حضنها الدافئ الرؤوم، بعدما خسرت الوطن الأول الغالي على فؤادي الملتاع ومن حسن حظي وحظك، أيتها المرأة المخلوقة من جوهر العذوبة وزبدة البراءة، أننا عرفنا دمشق وهي لم تزل في الريعان.
ويوم كنا نحن ما فتئنا أغراراً يافعين... ولست أغالي إذا ما زعمت بأن من لم يعرف دمشق في تلك الأيام الخوالي، أو تلك السنين الهيفاء ذات البياض الثلجي الناصع، ومن لم يستيقظ باكراً ليجيء إلى هذه الدنيا قبل أن تخسر شبابها ويذوي نسغها وينضب زيتها.
قد فاته خير كثير وحلت به خسارة لا تعويض لها آخر الدهر لقد افتض المال بكارتها، وأفسدتها السياسة ذات الماهية الغوغائية التي لا تمسّ شيئاً دون أن تحوّله إلى هشيم يابس بغير حياة...
