حرص بعض الأدباء على جميع رسائلهم ونشرها بين الناس، كما تنطوي عليه من منفعة أدبية، وفائدة معرفية، وتبقى الرسائل أهم الوثائق لما تكشفه عن أسرار خاصة جداً لا يمكن العور عليها في أي وثيقة أخرى، إذ يستطيع الأديب فيها أن يقول ما يشاء له القول. في هذا الإطار تأتي تجربة أدبية فريدة في فن الرسائل. لقد اتفق الشاعران حميد سعيد وسامي مهدي منذ بداية عام 1922 على أن يتبادلا الرسائل الطويلة (نسبياً) بينهما، وأن يعرض فيها مختلف شؤون الحياة والأدب، بروح طليقة متحررة من التزمت الأكاديمي، والمواصفات الاجتماعية، وقيود العقل البارد، فكان لهما ما أرادا، وكان أن كشف كل واحد منهما، أمام صاحبه، معاناته الخاصة والعامة، وآراءه الصريحة في الواقع الأدبي وفي الشخصيات التي أدت أدواراً معينة في الشعر خاصة.
وقد ظل دأبهما على تبادل الرسائل حتى بداية عام 1996، وحتى بلغ عدد الرسائل التي تبادلاها عشرين رسالة، تغطي سنوات أربعاً هي من أشد سنوات العسر و"الرمادة" التي عاشها العراق في "تجربة إنسانية لا مثيل لها في "لا إنسانيتها" الضاغطة عليه، تجربة الحصار.
ولما كان سامي مهدي وحميد سعيد شاعرين مهمين من شعراء "ما بعد السياب"، وقد أدى كل منهما دوراً متميزاً في الحقلين الإبداعي الخاص والثقافي العام، كان حتماً أن تأتي الرسائل التي تبادلاها والتي ضمتها صفحات هذا الكتاب عاكسة لهذا التميز الذي مثله كل واحد منهما.
