لا يعرف عالم السينما تماماً كيفية التعامل مع السينما الفلسطينية على وجه التحديد، لأنها آخذة في الظهور كسينما عديمة الجنسية، تكوّنت في أتون أخطر العواقب والمخاوف الوطنية. حَرّرتُ هذا الكتاب جزئياً لمعالجة تفاصيل هذا التناقض الذي يكرّس ويعقد في الوقت نفسه مفهوم السينما الوطنية.
ظهرت الحالة الأخيرة الأكثر شهرة، والتي أثّرت على هذا التناقض، في رفض أكاديمية الفنون السينمائية والعلوم النظرَ في مشاركة فيلم "يد إلهية" (2002) لإيليا سليمان في مسابقة الأوسكار، وكان اعتراضها يقوم على أنه شخص عديم الجنسية. حصل هذا في السنة التي يقبل فيها مهرجان كان السينمائي ثلاثة أفلام فلسطينية في فئات مختلفة. أما فيما يتعلّق بجنسية إيليا سليمان، فهو أيضاً مواطن إسرائيلي رسمياً، والحقيقة أنه سيتمّ قبوله في الأكاديمية، إذا تقدّم بفيلمه كإسرائيلي، إلا أنه وُلد في أسرة فلسطينية مسيحية، ليس لها حقوق مواطنة متساوية في الدولة اليهودية. قال مسؤول في الأكاديمية للصحفيّيْن: "لا تقبل الأكاديميةُ الأفلامَ القادمة من البلدان التي لا تعترف بها الأمم المتّحدة". ولكن نفس قرار الأمم المتّحدة الذي اعترف بقيام دولة إسرائيل، قسم فلسطين التاريخية إلى دولَتَيْن، والدول الأخرى هي فلسطين. فإذا لم تكن فلسطين دولة، فإن هذا الشيء نفسه ينطبق على إسرائيل.
