يحتلّ الحج مكانة مهمة في الإسلام، وأهمية هذه الشعيرة نابعة من كونها تمثّل إحدى معالم الإسلام المتميزة عمّا سواها من معالم جاءت بها سائر الديانات السماوية.
إضافة إلى بُعدها الإجتماعي، إذ تعدّ مزيجاً رائعاً من العقيدة والعبادة والسياسة والإجتماع، يمارسها المسلم بشكل دوري لترقى به سلّم الكمال روحياً وحضارياً، كما تمثّل الروابط المثالية التي تستحقّ العناء، حيث يكون كلّ شيء عالمياً وتقريباً مشتركاً: الأرض، اللغة، النداء، اللباس... فهي الشعيرة التي توحي بالإنسلاخ عن الخواص المحلّية، والإستعداد للتحلّي بالخواص الوحدوية والتقريبية؛ وواضح أنّ هذه العطاءات الشعورية لا تنحصر بطائفة دون أخرى، بل هي تعمّ كافة المسلمين على وجه الأرض.
وهذا الكتاب يشير إلى هذه العطاءات في عرض روائي وموضوعي، ويؤكّد إضافة إلى أهمية هذه الشعيرة العبادية والإجتماعية وجود المساحات المشتركة بين المدرستين على هذا الصعيد.
