«ثمن الحرية» نصوص قصصية قصيرة وقصيرة جداً تنطلق من رؤى خاصة قائمة على حضور البعد الإنساني في الدرجة الأساس. تؤسس بنيتها النصية على الواقع الملموس المرئي متجهة نحو العمق/ الداخل لكل تجربة، وإذ بنا إزاء شخصيات واقعية ضمن عدد من المساحات النصية، وقد برع الكاتب "محمد علي مدخلي" بإخراج كل تجربة من بعدها الشمولي العام إلى كونها تجربة خاصة تمثل قضية فردية لشخصية ما، فأدخل بنموذجه الجديد في القص عنصراً مهماً في إنتاج المعنى وتحديد هوية الذات وإبراز مواقفها الذاتية، أي إعادة تشكيل النص وتأشير موقف كل شخصية وتجربتها بالارتكاز على فكرة مكثفة وخاطفة، عامة وخاصة، أو معاصرة ووضعها في سياقات النص لتكون هذه الفكرة النواة؛ علامة أو مؤشراً تأويلياً لإنتاج المعنى في النص المكتوب.
تحت عنوان «أكوام مبعثرة» نقرأ:
"أكوام وقت ضائع على قارعة الطريق. قذفتها أمواج مساء مقمر. إحدى الأوراق التائهة تحويك. انتظرتك ملياً استنزفُ أكسجين الانتظار الأبدي. نمّل الزمن أطرافي. تفاقمت مشاعري. وُئِد بخلجاني أمل اللقاء. أحسست بعدم قدومك لكن انتظرك. أعي أنّي لست مُجدوَلاً بأجندتك. وأني مجرد منحى إجباري أجبرك الزمن على انعطافه. القمر اكتمل بدراً. أرخى الليل سدوله. هزّني التحنان لمآقيك. رحت أتمتم (تأخرتِ.. يا عمري الذي أقبل)...".
تضم المجموعة ثلاثة وعشرون نصاً قصصياً جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "جسد المرايا"، "الحياة الفاضلة"، "ثمن الحرية"، "القلب الضرير"، "آية"، "شيء من الذاكرة" (...)، وأخيراً، خيال عدسة: قصص قصيرة جداً التقطتها العدسة خلف كواليس الزمن 50.
