أمام حالة الفوات الحضاري الذي تعيشه المجتمعات العربية الإسلامية وبدلاً من مواجهة التحدي بالعمل على تنمية البعد العلمي، وتجاوز القصور الذي يعتري فهمنا للبعد العقائدي، والبدء بمشروع تنويري، وبدلاً من أن نواجه حقيقة تأخرنا وقصورنا ونعمل على تجاوزها، ظهرت استجابات معاكسة مرضية من مظاهرها: الإنكار وتوهمات الكمال، والهروب للماضي ونظرية المؤامرة، والإنكفاء على الذات. إن ظاهرة الإعجاز العلمي / العددي - وفق زعمي - ما هي إلا إحدى ظواهر القصور الحضاري الذي تعاني منه مجتمعاتنا العربية الإسلامية. إن الإعجاز العددي يشبه التنجيم، من حيث استخدامه لحجج ذات طبيعة علمية وحسابية، مع افتقاد كليهما لمعايير العلم ... وقد يكون من الدوافع الأساسية للكتابات الإعجازية والتحمّس لها: التقوى والرغبة في الثواب الأخروي، ولكن هذه التقوى والنوايا الطيبة لوحدها لا تكفي، فالتقوى، في مجال البحوث مشروطة بتطبيق معايير البحث العلمي، وكذلك بالثمرة العلمية لهذه البحوث بما ينفع الناس، فبالإضافة إلى العيوب المنهجية في هذه الكتابات، نجد أن القضايا التي يتصدى لحلها الإعجاز العددي هي: إما قضايا إشكالية ذات طابع غيبي استهلكت جدلاً عبر التاريخ البشري ومن المستحيل البت بها على طريقة تقديم براهين علمية ورياضية، أو أنها قضايا مجال حسمها هو علم التاريخ والوثائق، أو أنه - في حالات كثيرة - بدلاً من حل القضايا الإشكالية نفسها، أدى الإعجاز العددي إلى نتائج عكسية، وخلق إشكاليات وشكوك جديدة.
