هذا كتاب تناول فيه المؤلف رحمه الله تعالى موضوعاً بالغ الأهمية، وهذا الموضوع يعني بتزكية النفس البشرية وطهارتها، وتكميل الفطرة الإنسانية وإصلاحها.
وقد قسم المؤلف رحمه الله تعالى كتابه إلى مقدمة تناول فيها -بعد فاتحتها البديعة، وبراعة استهلالها- بيان الأمور التي يتوقف عليها كمال العبد، وهي تحقيق كمال عبوديته لله عز وجل، فيكمل كل جزء منه، من جسمه ونفسه وعقله وقلبه وروحه.
ثم أتبع هذه المقدمة بفصل تمهيدي بين فيه فضل الكمال، وشدة الافتقار إليه، وفضل المرشدين إليه، مع بيان الفضل الحاصل بتحكيم هؤلاء المرشدين والانقياد لهم والأدب معهم.
ثم أعقبه بفصل يتعلق ببيان منشأ المعرفة والمحبة لله عز وجل من أين تنشأ؟ ومن ماذا تنشأ؟
ثم شرع في بيان الأصول التي تبتنى عليها قواعد معرفة الله عز وجل ومحبته، وجعلها في تسعة أصول، هي: صحة الاعتقاد في جميع ما جاء عن الله عز وجل وعن رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم، واليقظة والتوبة، والمحاسبة، والإخلاص، وآداب الصلاة الباطنة، وتهذيب الأخلاق ورياضة النفس ومخالفتها، للتمرن على مكارم الأخلاق، والمراقبة، وصفة أحوالها وثمراتها، والمشاهدة وأنواعها وتقاسيمها.
وبعد أن كمل المؤلف الأصول التسعة التي عليها مدار السلوك من البداية إلى النهاية، وجعل هذه الأصول بمثابة أركان الصلاة وواجباتها التي لا تجبر بسجود السهو: ختم الكتاب بفصل ألحق به بعض اللواحق التي بها يتم السلوك، وجعلها بمثابة هيئات الصلاة وسننها، وجعل هذه اللواحق في فصول خمسة، هي: حفظ المزاج في جدة السير والسلوك، ومجانية صحبة الأحداث، ومطالعة سنن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وأن لا يفوته ورده عند الثلث الآخر، ودوام الافتقار إلى الله عز وجل.
ثم ختم الكتاب بمثل ما ابتدأ به من حمد الله والثناء عليه، والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وآله وصحبه.
