أبو دلامة الأسدي شاعر من شعراء مخضرمي الدولتين الأموية والعباسية، لم يكن له نباهة في العصر الأموي، أما في العصر العباسي فقد ظهرت شاعريته ظهوراً واضحاً، وكأنّ قيام الدولة العباسية جعل الشعر يجري على لسانه جرياناً، فكان شاعراً ونديماً للخلفاء، فأشاع بشعره روح الدعابة والفكاهة في قصور الخلفاء وفي المحافل العامة والخاصة، وأيّد في شعره حقّ العباسيين في الخلافة، ومدح خلفاؤهم: السفاح والمنصور والمهدي، ورثى من مات منهم رثاء فيه تفجع وحسرة ولوعة خاصة الخليفة السفاح، وهجا من نازعهم حقهم أو من خرج عليهم، وكان من أبرز الشعراء الذين هجوا أنفسهم، وقد انفرد في هجائه لنفسه وأسرته بأسلوب الدعابة والفكاهة والإضحاك، فكان شعره ظريفاً لطيفاً، وقد شغل موضوع الدعابة والفكاهة والإضحاك كثيراً من هذا الشعر، بل إنه كان السمة العامة لشعر هذا الشاعر، فبالإضافة إلى هجائه لنفسه ولأسرته جعل من بلغته موضوعاً يتندر فيه في قصيدتين بلغ مجموع أبياتهما أربعة وستين بيتاً.
أمّا هذا البحث فإنّه يتطلب أن أعرف بالشاعر وببعض جوانب حياته التي لا بدّ لدارس شعره أن يعرف عليها؛ فاسمه ولقبه ونسبه وأسرته ومولده ونشأته، وحياته في العصرين الأموي والعباسي، ووفاته من الأمور التي يحتاج إليها الدارس لشعر هذا الشاعر.
وأما جمع الشعر وتحقيقه فإن الباحث يستمد مادته الأساسية من الأصول، وأصول الشعر العربي القديم هي المصادر الأدبية من كتب التراجم والطبقات، وكتب الأدب واللغة، وكتب الإختيار، وكتب التاريخ وغير ذلك، خاصة إذا لم تتوفر الدواوين وهي المصدر الأساسي للشعر، وأبو دلامة واحد من الشعراء الذين لم يصل إلينا شعره مجموعاً في ديوان، لذلك فإنّي لجأت في هذا البحث إلى المصادر الأدبية لأجمع شعر هذا الشاعر منها، وقد رأيت أن أتحدث عن هذه الكتب لأنها المصدر الأساسي لشعر أبي دلامة.
