شرعت الأمم المتحدة تعنى بتنظيم السلم قبل أن يخرس المدفع في القارة الأوروبية، مخافة أن يعقب الزوبعة التي عصفت بالعالم المتمدن، إنطلاق الشهوات من عقالها فيتجدد النزاع بين الدول المتنافسة.
ولا يختلف اثنان في أن العمل الإنشائي بعد الحرب يتطلب توفر حسن النية في الشعوب، وتفهماً متبادلاً لحاجات كل منها وأهدافه، ولما كان الشعوب الإسلامية تؤلف خمس سكان المعمور وكان ذات قوة روحية وزمنية لا يجوز إغفال شأنها عند وضع التسويات العامة.
عرض المؤلف للعلاقت بين الإسلام وأوروبا لتبديد ما علق بأذهان الغربيين من أوهام تجعلهم ينظرون إلى المسلمين نظرة بعيدة عن الأنصاف، ومن هذه الأوهام الشائعة إعتقاد الأوروبيين أن الشعوب الإسلامية يعميها التعصب، وأن حركة الجامعة الإسلامية تهدف إلى بعث روح الجهاد وإخضاع الغرب كله لسيطرة الموحدين.
في القسم الأول من هذا الكتاب يعالج آغا خان مسألة الجامعة الإسلامية من الناحية التاريخية ويعرض لها بشكلها الحالي، متحدثاً عن منشئها وأهدافها، وقد تولى الدكتور "زكي علي" في الفصل الثاني من الكتاب تعريف هذه الحضارة إلى الأوروبيين مع العلم أن الغرب مدين لها بالشيء الكثير، وفي الفصل الثالث والأخير عرض الكاتبان للنقاط التي يلتقي عندها الشرق والغرب، وللأمس التي يمكن أن يقوم عليها تعاونهما.
