بالرغم من إنتشار العقاقير المحضّرة صناعياً واستخدامها بصفة أساسية لعلاج الأمراض، إلا انه في حالات كثيرة تعجز بعض المركبات العضوية والمحضّرة صناعياً عن محاكاة التأثير العلاجي الذي تحدثه المركبات الطبيعية التي هي على شكل عقار خام. رغم أن المادة المصنعة على درجة عالية من النقاء، والسبب هو وجود مواد كيميائية أخرى في العقار الخام الطبيعي على شكل شوائب وينسب بسيطة إلا انها ذات تأثير منشّط يزيد من فعالية المادة الأصلية ونشاطها في أداء دورها الفسيولوجي والعلاجي، وهو ما يعرف بالتأثير أو الحافز المنشّط، والأمثلة على ذلك عديدة ومن أهمها استخدام أوراق نبات الديجتاليس في علاج أمراض القلب، وأوراق السنامكه مسهلاً قوياً أو مليناً معدياً، وكذلك استخدام جذور نبات الراؤلفيا في علاج ضغط الدم المرتفع ونبات اللحلاح أو العكنة في علاج مرض النقرس (الروماتيزم) والسرطان، ونبات الكاتارانس في علاج مرض السرطان وإيقاف تكاثر الخلايا السرطانية وانقساماتها. هذا فضلاً عن أنه ثبت مخبرياً أن المواد الكيميائية المحضّرة صناعياً لها الكثير من التأثيرات الجانبية بجانب الأثر العلاجي لها، وغالباً ما تكون هذه التأثيرات الجانبية ضارة وإن تأخر ظهور آثارها الضارة إلى ما بعد فترة من استخدام العلاج. لذلك كان من الأفضل صحياً استخلاص المادة الكيميائية وفصلها من مصادرها الطبيعية وتنقيتها واستخدامها بعد ذلك. ولقد أثبت العلم الحديث أن المواد الكيميائية الطبيعية (الموجودة في النباتات) أكثر أماناً من المواد الكيميائية (المصنعة كيميائياً)، لأن المواد الكيميائية الطبيعية تتكسر داخل الجسم الإنساني من خلال سلسلة من التفاعلات الحيوية تتحلل إلى مواد أخرى بواسطة انزيمات الجسم الإنساني وهرموناته فيمتصها ويستفيد منها. أما المواد الكيميائية المصنعة بواسطة الإنسان فبعضها لا يتأثر بالأنزيمات التي يفرزها الجسم فلا تذوب داخله بل تبقى كما هي، مما يؤدي إلى تراكم هذه المواد السامة داخل الجسم على مرّ السنين فتفتك به وتضعف من مناعته الطبيعية الأمر الذي يؤدي إلى ظهور الأمراض المزمنة والضعف الجسدي العام فيشيب الإنسان ويهرم قبل الأوان.
