يتخذ هذا البحث في المسألة الطائفية أبعاداً مختلفة، نظراً إلى تشابك العناصر الإجتماعية التي تدخل في بنائها، فهي ذات إمتداد في الزمان، حيث تذهب جذورها إلى عهود سابقة على النظام السياسي القائم، وعلى الإستعمار والمراحل التي مهّدت له، أي إلى الإنقسامات الدينية والمذهبية التي تبعت ظهور الاديان في العالم الذي يُسمى اليوم بــ "العربي"، ما يفسح المجال للبحث التاريخي، الإجتماعي والسياسي كي يقدم مساهمته في المعرفة العلمية التي تتناولها؛ كما أنها ذات إمتداد في المكان، بحيث إن الطائفة تتجاوز حدود أوطانها، ما يتيح البحث في الجغرافية السياسية (والمجتمعية) للكيانات الطائفية والسياسيات المتصلة بها، وفي إجتماعها السياسي في ضوء أنظمة "الدول" التي تحتضنها.
أضف أن للطائفية آليات بناء أو إعادة بناء في ظل النظام السياسي القائم، وذات صلة بأدلوجاتها (أو "ثقافاتها") الموروثة، والتي تختص بها مؤسسات طائفية (دينية - مذهبية) تنمو في رحم هذا النظام نفسه، متكيفةً مع التطور الإقتصادي والإجتماعي الذي يشهده المجتمع الرأسمالي بصيغته التبعية والخدماتية والريعية، ما يتطلب البحث في الأدلوجات ومؤسساتها، سواء على الصعيد الأنتروبولوجي أم المعرفي، ومسألة التكيف تلك.
وقد تبرز أهمية البحث في "تطور المؤسسات الشيعية في لبنان" حيث يرصد المؤلف بجدارة تحول البنية الطائفية من العائلية إلى المؤسسة، فالأولى ذات نفوذ محلي - مناطقي، والثانية ذات سلطة عابرة للمناطق، وتتجه نحو توحيد الطائفية بما يتجاوز البنية العائلية ويجهد لتجسيد القرابة الدموية والأدلوجية في مؤسسات الطائفة المختلفة، المذهبية والسياسية، مروراً بالمؤسسات الإجتماعية والتربوية والإعلامية.
