هو أبو علي الحسن بن هاني بن عبد الأول بن الصباح الحكمي الدمشقي وأمه كانت من الأهواز، ولد في باستان ماتارد من كورة خورستان سنة 141هـ في عهد أبي جعفر المنصور ثاني خلفاء العباسيين، ولما مات أبوه إلتجأ إلى عطار ليشتغل عنده ولم يكن يسمعه إلا في العلم وكثير ما كان يترنم ف يالنظم ويود أن يتعرف بوالبة بن الحباب لما كان يسمعه عنه من الشهرة في النظم، وما لبث أن تعرف به، وكيفية ذلك أن والبة مر يوماً بالعطار الذي كان عنده أبو علي الحسن بن هاني فتوسم فيه الذكاء والفطنة وتوقد الذهن وسأله عن اسمه ولما عرفه ابن هاني قال قد ظفرت بمنيتي والبة، وصحبه إلى الكوفة ثم إلى بغداد وهناك صحب الشعراء ودرس على العلماء حتى أصبح من أشعر أهل عصره وأغزرهم علماً وطار ذكره في الآفاق حتى تحدث به كل رائح وغاد ونسب إليه غير ما هو له من الأشعار، كان له أبياتاً غير عامرة وهي التي كان ينظمها حال سكره لأنه كان إلى الخمر ميالاً، ومن هنا تولد بقلبه الغرام والتعلق ببعض الجواري وله معهن قصص شهيرة ونوادر عديدة أكثرها مع هارون الرشيد والجارية عنان، ولقب بأبي نواس لأن خلفا الأحمر أحد عمال اليمن استدعاه يوماً وكان يوده أكثر من غيره من الشعراء وقال له أنت من اليمن فتكن بأسماء الذوين (أي المصدرة أسماؤهم بذو) فاختار ذا نواس واشتهر بهذه الكنية توفي في الثامنة والخمسين من عمره سنة 991هـ.
