ظلت القصيدة عند ناصر الدين الأسد محافظة على تقاليد الشعر العربي، واستقرت على أسلوب يستعير من الموروث نسقه وينأى بها عن الخطابية، ومن الرومانسية ذاتيتها وحرارة مشاعرها بتحفظ يجعلها بعيدة عن العاطفة المفرطة. ومع أنه عاصر ولادة القصيدة الحديثة، ونظم عدداً قليلاً من القصائد متبعاً نظام التفعيلة إلا أن موقفه من الحداثة الشعرية، وما آلت إليه اليوم، ظل موقفاً حذراً، يشوبه قلق بالغ مما يراه ابتعاداً عن منابع الشعر العربي الأصيل... ويخيل إلي وأنا أراجع قصائده.. أنني أمام بناء مرمري متقن الصنع، شأن أعماله الأدبية جميعاً، فالقصيدة عنده أشبه بتمثال إغريقي، يقف على مرتفع من الأرض، يتطلع إلى الأزمنة من موقعه، ويسايرها بشروطه الفنية الخاصة.
