لا يخلو شعب من الشعوب من عادات وتقاليد متوارثة ومنقولة، مبتدعة ومصقولة، والشعر العامي قديم قدم اللهجات، فالشعر فصيحه وعاميه من أغراض أرواح الشعوب ومتعها على اختلاف طبقاتها، والشعر العامي العماني يتوافق مع هذا المضمار، ويمتلك خاصية التطور والتجديد في المباني والمعاني والأغراض الشعرية، لذا كثرت أنماطه الشعرية وأنواعه غناء وتركيباً، وشعر الميدان رغم اختلاف إيقاعه وأسلوب أدائه وانفراد عمان دون سواها به، فهو لا يختلف مضموناً عن معظم الفنون الشعرية في الوطن العربي، وقد شمله التطور والتجديد.
الميدان شعر فريد، عربي المنشأ والصياغة إلا أن العمانيين أدخلو عليه الرقص -مما وجدوه من خلال احتكاكهم بشعوب شرق أفريقيا- ليكون فناً راقياً في العرض والأداء، جعل هذا الفن كغيره من الفنون الشعبية الغنائية، مفرح الأعياد ومسرح أيام الأعراس، كما يقام للتشريف بالزيارات ثم تطور ليدخل في المجال الطبي لاعتقاد بعض الناس أنه يفيد في علاج المرضى لما يلقى في جلساته من قصائد تدعو للمريض بالشفاء.
وعلى الرغم من الأهمية التي احتلها هذا الفن العشبي العماني إلا أنه لم يلق العناية اللازمة من الدرس والتمحيص، وهذا ما دعا "عيسى بن حمد الشعيلي" إلى طرق هذا الباب وبالتالي تدوين كتابه الذي بين يدينا والذي اهتم فيه بالكشف عن الجانب الأدبي لهذا الفن وليس الجانب الغنائي منه، وهذا ما أوجب على الباحث اختيار نماذج من هذا الشعر المحكي باللهجة العمانية المحلية، غير أنه وحرصاً على فهم القارئ لمضمون هذه الأشعار اعتنى بتشكيل الأبيات وبعد ذلك بشرح مضمونها باللغة العربية الفصحة. وفي إطار مدينة عن الجانب الأدبي لهذا الشعر اهتم الباحث بإلقاء الضوء على جذور هذا الشعر وأصوله وأشباهه في الفنون الأخرى في البلاد العربية.
