حرص الكتاب على إتباع منهج إستقراء النصوص القانونية في المواثيق الدولية وإدراج إحصائيات دقيقة تتعلق بواقع تطبيق تلك النصوص على الأرض أي أن هذا الكتاب حرص على إتباع أسلوب البحث الميداني من خلال زيارة المواقع والمؤسسات المختصة بعد عرض المواثيق الدولية وإستهلاك مواقف الفقه منها.
صعوبة البحث في القانون الدولي الإنساني تتجلى في أن العلم برمته هو علم معاصر وبالتالي فإن البحث يتطلب مصادر حديثة معظمها مصادر أجنبية كما أن الحصول على المعلومة الدقيقة من الواقع المختصة يصطدم بصعوبات جمة أبرزها ضرورة الحصول على أذونات رسمية قبل زيارة تلك المواقع ناهيك عن موقف بعض الجهات السياسية التي تعتبر أي إنتقاد لعمل مؤسسة ما هو إنتقاد لها وبالتالي تمنع أي معلومة من الخروج إلى أفق الكتب والبحوث.
عالج الكتاب مشكلة تطبيق قواعد القانون الدولي الإنساني على أرض النزاعات المسلحة خصوصاً إذا كان النزاع ذو طبيعة مزدوجة والمسائل التي قد تثار إذا ما اندلع نزاع له مثل هذا الطابع وهل أن التعريفات التي حفلت بها النصوص كافية لأن تضع هذه الحماية موضع تطبيق خصوصاً أن مسألة حماية الصحفيين وردت في مادة واحدة فقط هي المادة 79.
ولقد اعتمد الكتاب هيكلية تستند إلى البحث في العموم ثم محاولة حصر البحث في نطاق ضيق يتمثل أما بالعراق بشكل عام وبجزء منه كما حصل مع موضوع حماية الممتلكات الثقافية في العراق إذا تم حصر البحث بشكل أساسي بالممتلكات الثقافية في محافظة ذي قار.
في الحقيقة إن الدراسة هي التي أوجبت تقسيم الكتاب إلى ثلاثة فصول يتناول الأول منها الحماية الدولية للممتلكات الثقافية ويبحث الثاني في الحماية الدولية للأعيان المدنية وخصص الثاني للحماية الدولية للصحفيين، مع تقسيمات فرعية ذات طابع ميداني.
