بعث الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم متمماً لمكارم الأخلاق ومثيراً ونذيراً. ولم يغفل الشرع الحنيف جانباً من جوانب الحياة إلا ونظمه وبين ما يتوجب على الناس فعله والانتهاء عنه. وقد تصدى علماء الأمة لبيان هذه الأحكام ومن هؤلاء العلماء الأعلام الإمام الحافظ أبو بكر أحمد بن الحسين البيهقي المتوفى سنة 458هـ، فكتابه الآداب قد جمع فيه ما روي في البحر والصلة ومكارم الأخلاق، والآداب، وبدأه في بر الوالدين وأنهاه بقول الله عز وجل "إن الذين آمنوا وعملوا الصالحات إنا لا نضيع أجر من أحسن عملا".
وأصل هذا الكتاب نسخة محفوظة بدار الكتب المصرية، وهي مكتوبة بخط عربي وقد عمد المحققان إلى تقويم النص وضبطه وإصلاح الأخطاء الواردة فيه، كما قاما بتخريج الأحاديث وعزوها إلى مصادرها، ثم وضعا للكتاب فهارس شاملة.
