نقرأ في هذا الكتاب (نصوص مختارة) من فلسفة (التاريخ) من إعداد وترجمة محمد الهلالي وعزيز لرزق، قدما للعمل بمقدمة تشكل قراءة نقدية للتاريخ ومناهجه، وقد ميزا فيها بين قراءتين مختلفتين للتاريخ: قراءة معرفية.
وبهذا المعنى يتحدثان عن الأحداث والتحولات التاريخية، وقراءة قيمية، تهدف إلى الحكم على هذه التحولات، وإضفاء أو نزع القيمة عنها، وتتمثل هذه القراءة في "إن التفكير في التاريخ هو في الأصل التفكير في معنى التاريخ، بما هو مغامرة إنسانية.
فالتاريخ ليس فقط تنظيماً لمراحل الزمن ننتقل فيه من ماض إلى حاضر إلى مستقبل، بل هو تشكيلة دلالية تحدد معنى حدث بوضعه في سياقه الزمني، كما أنه تشكيلة غائبة تحدد توجه التاريخ ذاته...".
إنطلاقاً من هذا التوجه المعرفي ينطوي الكتاب على نصوص مقتبسة ومترجمة عن أصحابها منها في: 1"تحديد المفهوم" في كتاب تاريخ الأخبار والإعتبار لـ عبد الرحمن ابن خلدون، نقلاً عن مقدمة ابن خلدون، و"أصل ودلالات كلمات "تاريخ" للمؤرخ سليم رضوان وتدور حول مفهوم التاريخ العربي - الإسلامي، 2-في "معنى التاريخ" نص جاء تحت عنوان "التأليف التاريخي" للكاتب عبد الله العروي ويدور حول التاريخ بالمعنى التقليدي (التاريخ المكتوب) وإرتباطه بإختراع الكتابة في الشرق الأوسط، 3-في "مشكلات التاريخ" للفيلسوف ريمون آرون حول مصطلح التاريخ ومعناه الملموس ومعناه الصوري والواسع، 4-نص حول "الحقيقة بين التاريخ والسياسة" للمفكر حنا أراندت، وتدور حول أهمية أن تكون المعلومة المتعلقة بالوقائع موثوقاً منها... ونصوص أخرى يحضر فيها "كارل ماركس" و"فريدريك نيتشه"، و"ميشيل فوكو" و"علي أومليل"، و"ابن الأثير"، و"الطبيب يتزيني"، وآخرون، ويختم الكتاب بأقوال فلسفية.
