هذا "كتاب التاريخ" لأبي حَفصٍ الفلاس عمرو بن علي بن بحر السَّقاء البصري (ت 249ه) من رواية أبي عبد الله محمد بن عبد السَّلام الخُشَنيّ القُرطبيّ (ت 286ه) وهو من دراسة وتحقيق الأستاذ محمد الطَّبَرانيّ الذي يبدأ عمله بتعريف البصري وشيوخه وعصره ومكانته ويفعل كذلك مع الراوي الخُشَنيّ القُرطبيّ ثم ينتقل إلى التعريف بكتاب التاريخ ومكانته في تصحيفات المحدَّثين ويذكر تاريخ تأليفه سنة 201ه ويتابع مع رحلة مؤلفه محمد بن عبد السلام الخُشني إلى الحج، وقَصدَهُ للبصرة، قبل سنة 240ه، ووضعه لهذه النسخة التي اعتمدها في التحقيق وتوصيفها من خلال محاور أربعة تشكل مضمونها وهي:
- "شِقٌ تاريخي أَخباري": مبدأ التاريخ عند المسلمين، وسيرة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم والخلفاء والملوك.
- "شِقٌ تاريخي صناعي عامّ": وهو في جملة مباحثه ذو مهمّةٍ نقديّةٍ وظيفية، هي ما يهمُّ المحدّث في قراءة الأسانيد وفهمها: الكنى، والأسماء، والوفيات، وفيات رواة مُدُن مخْصوصة، الرّواة عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم من القبائل. - "شِقٌ نقدي صناعي خاص": مسْردٌ بالرّواة عن ابن عبّاس على اخْتلاف المدن، أو لِنَقُلْ: دورانُ الرّواية على ابن عباس في المدينة ومكّة، والبصْرة والكوفة.
- "شِقٌ نقدي صناعي أخص": ويكاد يكون خالصاً لمدينة البصرة، وفيه تسميةُ شيوخ حميد الطويل وشيوخ سعيد بن أبي عَرُوبة، مع ذكر شيء من أخبار من اشتهر بالتدليس وتسمية من لم يسمع منه، واقتصر ثمّة على ابن عَروبة وقتادة.
وتأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب كونه يعود لفترة التأسيس؛ فواضعه من طبقة الرُّوّاد، المرجوع إليهم في أفانين الصناعة الحديثيّة، وهو أصْلٌ من تواريخ البصْريّين، كما أنّ الكتاب يعد أحد المخطوطات النادرة التي أفاد منها العلماء ومنهم الإمام البخاري في تاريخيه الأوسط والكبير، كما أفاد منها الذهبي، والرّودانيّ، وابن حجر حين ذكر "قال الفلاس في تاريخه".
