يعتبر كتاب التأريخ لأبي زرعة الدمشقي - المتوفِّى سنة 281/ 894 - أحد المراجع الأساسيّة في علم الحديث، ورجاله وطبقات الرواة، وأخبار الدِّمشقيّين منهم، وهو أقدم ما نعرف عن أخبار الدمشقيّين، من علماء وفقهاء، وأئمّة ومحدِّثين وقضاة ومؤرِّخين ورجال حديث، أو ممّن اشتغلوا في علمي الجرح والتعديل، الذين كان لهم وجود وإستقرار في دمشق، أو أقاموا بها محدِّثين، ثمّ نزحوا عنها إلى مدن أخرى، في القرنين الأوّل والثاني الهجريّين، والنصف الأوّل من القرن الثالث الهجري.
وترجع أيضاً أهمية هذا الكتاب إلى عظمة مؤلّفه، ومكانته العلميّة، وتوثيقه وضبطه، ويكفي أبا زرعة مكانة وكتابَه أهمِّيّة أن يرجع إليها علاّمة كبير مثل ابن حنبل - صاحب المذهب - الذي أرسل إليه يسأله في مسألة فقهيّة مهمّة، كذلك تبدو أهميّة الكتاب من عدد المؤرِّخين الضخم الذي اعتمدوا عليه ونقلوا منه كثيراً في مؤلّفاتهم.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب لكلّ المؤرخين الذين يهتمون بعلم الرّجال، اعتنى البروفسور لطفي منصور بدراسة وتحقيق "كتاب التاريخ" معتمداً على نسخة فريدة تضم عشرة أجزاء.
وعليه، يشتمل هذا الكتاب على ثلاثة فصول: الأوّل: التعريف بأبي زرعة المؤلِّف، والثاني: موضوع كتاب "التاريخ" لأبي زرعة ومضامينه، والفصل الثالث النصّ المحقَّق.
يمثل كتاب تاريخ أبي زرعة الدمشقي دراسة وتحقيق أهمية خاصة لدى باحثي التراجم والأعلام؛ حيث يندرج كتاب تاريخ أبي زرعة الدمشقي دراسة وتحقيق ضمن نطاق مؤلفات التراجم وما يرتبط بها من فروع الفكر الاجتماعي والثقافة.
