يجمع هذا الكتاب بين المتعة والفائدة فمؤلفه "أبو حاتم سهل بن محمد بن عثمان السجستاني" من كبار العلماء باللغة والشعر وله كتب ومصنفات كثيرة. وكتاب المعمرين كما يفصح اسمه، يتناول أخبار المعمرين ونوادرهم وأطرافاً من قصصهم وغرائبهم وهو لا يذكر في المعمرين إلا من تجاوز عمره 120 سنة فأكثر وقد ذكر في هذا الكتاب أكثر من 112 من المعمرين وقد عد الخضر عليه السلام أطول بني آدم عمراً ثم نوح النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم.
وقد اثر المحقق إخراجه ومراجعه فضبط متنه ورتبه ثم رقم تراجم الكتاب ليسهل على الباحث عملية تحديد صاحب كل رواية وترجم لحياة المؤلف وخرّج تراجم الكتاب والآيات.
