يعدُ الغلوّ سمة مميزة لطائفة "العلويين" الذين يقطنون الساحل السوري وجنوب تركيا ووسطها، وهم طائفة قلما كتب أفرادها عنها بصراحةٍ لإزالة اللبس حول عباداتهم، وذلك له أسبابٌ كثيرة أذكر منها أهمها وهي: أولاً: أنّ السريّة سمةٌ مميزةٌ لها، فالغلو مرتبط مع "الأسرار" إرتباطاً يأخذ طابعاً براغماتياً وإيديولوجياً يصبح فيه التخلي عن السريّة تخلياً مطلقاً عن الدين، ثانياً: أنّ للغلوّ أشكالاً كثيرة فالغلاة متفقون على السرية والغلوّ ومختلفون على شكل هذا الغلوّ.
ولما كان إختلاف الغلاة مدخلاً لتفاوتٍ في الآراء والمعتقدات والتقاليد والأساليب، حدثت إنقساماتٌ كبيرةٌ بين طائفة الغلاة العلويين.
وقد قُسم الكتاب إلى بحوث خمسة ولكل بحث منها عدة موضوعات، تناول الكتاب في كل موضوع ما يلزمه أو بعض ما قيل فيه وحوله من حجج وبراهين نقلاً عن فلاسفة وعلماء قدماء ومحدثين ماديين وإلهيين، وجعل لهذه البحوث مقدمة ربما أسهبت فيها لتكون أكثر وضوحاً وطريقاً لاصباً يصل بالقارئ إلى كل بحث من تلك البحوث مطمئناً إلى معرفتها وإلى القصد من مضامينها قبل الدخول إليها، فكان البحث الأول: "إثبات الصانع الأول: عن طريق النقل والعقل والعلم والفلسفة..."، البحث الثاني: "فيما قيل عن مذهب التجلي وحجج القائلين فيه..."، "البحث الثالث: فيما قيل في الجبر والإختيار والكسب، وفي القضاء والقدر والخير والشر..."، "البحث الرابع: فيما قيل في نظرية التناسخ قديماً وحديثاً وبإختصار..."، "البحث الخامس: موجز في معرفة العقل والنفس ومما قيل في ذلك...".
