لا شك أن الحداثة بمجملها جاءت نتيجة احتكاك أو اتصال بالغرب الرأسمالي والتأثر بآدابه وفنونه المختلفة، ناهيك عن الانفعال بحضارته ككل، وتختلف درجة التأثر من بلد إلى آخر، ومن شعب إلى آخر، ومن فئة اجتماعية إلى أخرى في كتابه "جسور الحداثة المعلقة" يستعرض الدكتور سامي سويدان وعبر فصول ثلاث، ظواهر الإبداع الحداثي في الرواية والشعر والمسرح، تسبق ذلك مقدمة عن ظاهرة الحداثة وقضاياها ومقارباتها وأبعادها في مختلف الأنواع الأدبية عند الكتّاب العرب.
جاء الفصل الأول بعنوان: الثورة والتجديد في النصّ الروائي الحديث ويتضمن دراسة نقدية لأعمال غسان كنفاني "ما تبقى لكم"، "أم سعد"، "رجال في الشمس" وغيرها وهي دراسة في الخطاب السردي عند كنعاني.
وجاء الفصل الثاني بعنوان: كلاسيكية الحداثة في الشعر العربي، ويعرض لتجربة خليل حاوي في ديوانه "بيادر الجوع" بالمقارنة مع أعمال أخرى للشاعر مثل "نهر الرماد" سنة 1957 والناي والريح سنة 1961، ونظرة الشاعر المختلفة وتأثره بالتيار الحداثي في الأدب يترافق ذلك مع دراسة شاملة للإيقاع الشعري عند حاوي ويأتي الفصل الثالث والأخير بعنوان: النضالية وألفينة في العمل المسرحي، ويتعرض للفضاء التمثيلي للنص المسرحي بما يتصل به من كواليس وممرات وكاشفات ضوئية وغير ذلك من عناصر التكوين المشهدي وأدواته التي تحدد هيكلة الفضاء التمثيلي كما يمكن للقارئ أن يتخيلها أو لمشاهد أن يراها، مع نبذ مختارة لأهم الأعمال المسرحية العربية وكيفية العمل بها.
