فتنت أسطورة المتوسط الإنسان في كل زمان و مكان وفي كل الحضارات ، من الشرق إلى الغرب ومن الجنوب إلى الشمال . لقد عبر أوليس، وهو استعارة للإنسان في كل الأعمار ،هذا البحر – مركز ثقل التاريخ – ليتعرف عليه، وابتعد عنه لكي يغامر في عوالم أخرى غير معروفة ، ثم عاد إليه في هيئة أخرى غنيا بالتجربة ، لكي يستعيد القيم التماثلية لجذوره الخالصة. تبحث الحضارات العربية اليوم ، وبعد حقبه طويلة من التبعية، عن هوية جديد ، عن وعي جديد بدورها في التاريخ هذا البحر. قديما، فرض العرب أنفسهم على السواحل المتوسطة:"فتحوا البحر وسادوا البر – كما يقول ما تفيجيفتش – فتحوا شمال إفريقيا، ودخلوا الإسكندرية، استقروا على السواحل الشمالية للمتوسط . عرفوا أرسطو وبطليموس قبلنا نحن الأوروبية. على الرغم من حريق مكتبة الإسكندرية. لقد ترجم كتاب الجغرافيا من اليونانية والسريانية إلى اللغة العربية قبل أن يتم ذلك في اللغات الأوروبية. اتحد علم الفلك والرياضيات في كتاب "المجسطي" الشهير.وقد رأى الجغرافي المسعودة خرائط بحار مدينة صور التي أخد منها بطليموس نفسه المثال. كما تبنى البطاني منظورات بطليموس وتممها الخوارزمي وتجاوزها البيروني: كان هذا الأخير سابقا لغاليلي .لقد مرت المعارف الجغرافية من الشرق والجنوب الى غرب وشمال المتوسط."
