لقد لاحظ"بول بالطا" أن البحر البيض المتوسط كان منذ عهود سحيقة منطقة مواجهات وفي نفس الوقت منطقة مبادلات أيضا. ("بالطا") 1992 ص.13). في الواقع لا يمكن لي تحليل لتيارات التبادل في البحر المتوسط أن يغض الطرف عن هذه النزعة المتوسطية إلى المواجهة التي تعتبر الأصولية الإسلامية وهجوماتها على الغرب بالشمال المتوسطي شكلا من أشكالها الأخيرة. بالنظر إلى الماضي، نلاحظ شبه "حركية نواسية" كحركة رقاص الساعة امتدت في الزمان والمكان حيث تعاقبت الحروب بلا نهاية أحيانا وتوالت مع المبادلات المكثفة:حروب اليهود ضد البابليين والحثيين ضد المصريين والفرس ضد اليونانيين روما ضد قرطاج والحروب الصليبية بين المسيحيين والمسلمين وطرد اليهود والعرب من اسبانيا وهيمنة الإمبراطورية العثمانية وتمزقها والحملات الاستعمارية البريطانية العثمانية وتمزقها والحملات الاستعمارية البريطانية والفرنسية والإيطالية الاسبانية وتحرر المستعمرات
