شغلت قضية البحث عن هوية المجتمع الاسرائيلي الأوساط الثقافية والادبية داخل المجتمع الاسرائيلي واستغرقت مساحة لا بأس بها من النتاج الأدبي العبري المعاصر كما استغرقت امدا طويلا بدأ قبل قيام الدولة ولا يزال مستمرا. فهوية المجتمع الإسرائيلي- عندما تحديدها والوقوف على ابعادها الأصلية - تشويها الكثير من التعقيدات وربما يرجع ذلك إلى أن المجتمع الإسرائيلي نفسه يختلف في نشأته وتركيبته الاجتماعية عن الشعوب الأخرى قاطبة فتلك مجتمعات نشأت بالفطرة ولم تنشأ بقرار سياسي أو ظروف عسكرية او تفاقيات دولية. وعلى قدر تنوع الجنسيات الأصلية لمواطني اسرائيل وتعدد لغاتنم واصوار تاريخهم وتباين عاداتهم وطقوسهم واعرافهم وتوزيع ولائهم بين الوطن الأصلي والوطن الجديد، على قدر هذا كله تتنوع الجذور الأساسية لهوية المجتمع الإسرائيلي فهل تضرب هذه الهوية بجذورها فيما يسمى بـ" الهوية العبرية" ؟ أم أن جذورها ترجع إلى ما يسمى "بالهوية اليهودية" التى لم يتوصلوا إلى تعريف محدد وشاف لها حتى اليوم وما دور التيارات الصهيونية المختلفة (سياسية او روجيه أو عملية أو غيرها) في صياغة هذه الهوية ؟ وما علاقة هذه الهوية بفكرة الاختيار والخلاص وخصوصية العلاقة بين "اله بني اسرائيل وشعبه"؟ وهذكءا تشعبت وتباينت جذور الهوية الاسرائيلية وشكلت مادة خصبة للمفكرين والأدباء ومن هؤلاء عاموس عوز الذي احتلت قصته التى نعرض لها مكانة مميزة في نتاجه الأدبي فحاز بها على جائزة برينر في الأدب وجمعت في صفحاتها كل جذور الهوية السابق ذكرها في إطار أدبي لا يخلو من رأى الكاتب في كل واحد منها لذا رأينا ان تقوم بدراستها وإلقاء الضوء عليها.
