رمتني الأقدار بسهام النيابة إلى البصرة، المسماة بخزانة العرب وقبة الإسلام، فلما وردتها ورأيت ما فيها من عجائب الأنهار، وغرائب النخيل الأشجار الممتنعة العد والحصر، مع ما فيها من المد والجزر في اليوم مرتين، بحيث تمتلئ الأنهار والسواقي وكل عين. وقد آلت إلى الخراب، فلم يبق منها إلا الاسم، واندرست آثارها، فلم يبق منها إلا الرسم والوسم، وأحببت أن أؤلف كتاباً في بيان أنهارها، ونخيلها، وأشجارها، وبيان بيوتها القديمة، من ذوي الثروة العظيمة مع بيان أحوال بغداد.
وإن كنت قبل هذا قد ألفت في دار الخلافة أحسن الكلام في مدينة السلام، إلا إني أردت أن أجمع أحوال البلدتين في هذا الكتاب، وأحوال أراضي نجد، وقبائله وما يليه من البلاد، مع تصدير الكتاب ببعض ما ذكره الحكماء في سياسة الملوك، فشرعت في ذلك ورتبته على مقدمة وثلاثة مسالك، وخاتمة، وسميته "عنوان المجد في بيان أحوال بغداد والبصرة ونجد".
