في هذا الكتاب يصف المؤلف هداته من خلال رحلاته إلى مدن ثلاث هي الحجاز وبصرى وبغداد. حيث يصف مواطن جمال كل من بصرى وبغداد مبيناً أنهار كل منها ونخيلها، وأشجارها، وبيوتها القديمة، من ذوي الثروة العظيمة، ليتحدث من ثم ومن خلال رحلته إلى الحجاز أحوال نجد وقبائلها وما يليها من البلاد، مصدراً الكتاب ببعض ما ذكره الحكماء في سياسة الملوك، مرتباً ذلك كله على مقدمة وثلاثة مسالك وفيها أحوال بغداد وأحوال البصيرة، وأحوال نجد، وأخيراً فاتحة اشتملت على مباحث شتى حول بعض القضايا المتعلقة بهذه المدن الثلاث.
