هذا الكتاب ينطلق من النظر إلى الحضارات القديمة في المنطقة العربية على امتدادها الجغرافي على منطقة واحدة ذات خصائص مشتركة ارتبطت في أصولها العرقية واللغوية بجذور متشابكة ممتدة في عصور التاريخ القديم، ويتناول موضوع الأسطورة، باعتبار أنها شكلت الوعاء الفكري الأول لأشكال المعرفة عند الإنسان الأول.
لقد روت الأساطير وقائع وأحداث المدن القديمة وذكرت أحوال ملوكها وشخصياتها، كما أنها حفظت علوماً ومعارف مختلفة عن نشأة الكون وبداية الحياة وخلق الإنسان ومراحل التطور البشري، الأمر الذي يدعونا إلى القول أن مادة الأساطير هو الحدث التاريخي، هذا الحدث التاريخي ليس مصطنعاً أو متخيلاًن إنما هو وقائع وأحداث حصلت إما من صنع الإنسان، أو من صنع الطبيعة أو من صنع السماء.
ويلقي الكتاب الضوء على لفظ "أساطير الأولين" كما ورد في القرآن الكريم، وهو اللفظ الذي ذكره الكافرون بالمذمة ونسبوه إلى دعوة التوحيد المحمدية بغية إسقاطها، ولم يلتفوا أنهم بذلك اعترفوا بأن دعوة الرسول محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم لم تكن بدعاً من الرسلن وهي تتطابق في مضامينها مع ما جاء في الأساطير .
وينظر الكتاب إلى أن لكل أسطورة قيمة ودلالة وجوهرا وتكمن فيها أسرار ومعان بحاجة إلى التدقيق والتمحيص والتعمق لإدراكها وفهمها، ويؤكد على ضرورة العودة إلى اللغة العربية القديمة بلهجاتها المختلفة لفك رموز الأساطير بعيداً عن الترجمة القاصرة اليت غيبت الكثير من مراد الأساطير ومغازيها.
