يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن الرحالة الذي استقر في القرن التاسع عشر حول الصحراء وما يتاخمها من المدن العربية الكبرى مثل: استنبول, القاهرة, بغداد, دمشق, القدس..الخ, فقد كان أكثرهم في القرون السالفة للقرن التاسع عشر يطوفون مع القوافل التي تجوب الصحارى العربية دون دليل أو نقطة محددة يرمون الوصول إليها, إنما الصدفة هي التي تقودهم في تتبع طرق مختلفة, ومسارب متنوعة من المجاهل الشرقية, وهنالك العديد من القصص والحكايات والمذكرات التي تدور عن الرحالة الذين يظلون الطريق أو الذين يضيعون في الصحارى والجبال, وهذا هو ما يجعل الرحالة مكتشفا لمجاهل عديدة, لولا الصدفة ما كان له الحصول عليها, إنه نوع من الاكتشاف العلمي الذي يقع على الخط النقيض من الرحلة الأدبية الرومانطيقية رحلات لامارتين, وشاتوبريان, وبيير لوتي, وفوربان, وفوغويه, وفلوبير, ودو غاسباران, ذلك لأن الأدباء الرومانطيقيين في القرن التاسع عشر كانوا يزورون المناطق ذاتها, والأماكن ذاتها, فتوفرت لدينا مجموعة هائلة من الملاحظات المختلفة عن الصحراء والبدوي وحياة البادية التي تخص رحالة مختلفين, لكنها تدور في أماكن واحدة وتنهل من مراجع واحدة.
