"المتنبي في دراسات المستشرقين" هو دراسة تحليلية نقدية للدراسات الاستشراقية التي تناولت المتنبي. وقد جاءت تلك الدراسة ضمن تمهيد وأبواب ثلاثة وخاتمة. حيث مهد الدكتور الأمراني للدراسة بحيث تناول فيه مفهوم الشعور وطبيعته كما حدّده الاستشراق، موازناً بينه وبين مفهوم الشعر عند العرب باعتبار المتنبي ينتمي إلى مجال حضاري عربي مختلف بطبيعته عن المجال الحضاري الاستشراقي.
ثم انتقل إلى الباب الأول الذي ضم فصلين تناول الفصل الأول حدود الاستشراق، وعرض في الفصل الثاني لأسباب العناية بالأدب. وخصص الباب الثاني للقضايا الموضوعية وقد جاء ضمن أربعة فصول، تناول في الفصل الأول قضية النسب التي أراد الاستشراق أن يضيف إليها خطوطاً جديدة حيث عرضها الباحث وناقشها. وانتقل في الفصل الثاني للحديث عن ثورة المتنبي والتي عزاها المستشرقون إلى جذور إسماعيلية حيث حاول الدكتور الأمراني كشف البواعث الكامنة وراء هذا التفسير. وعرض في الفصل الثالث لصورة سيف الدولة التي احتلت مكاناً بارزاً في دراسات المستشرقين. وأما الفصل الرابع فقد كان حول قضية العروبة وكيف فسرها المستشرقون. وبالانتقال إلى الباب الثالث نجد أن الباحث قد خصصه للقضايا الفنية وذلك لأنها تتيح قياس الذوق الأدبي الاستشراقي، وقدرته على النفاذ إلى كنوز لغة آخرى غير لغته وقد جاء ضمن فصول أربع خصص لكل فصل قضية من هذه القضايا.
كانت القضية الأولى تتعلق بالبحث والتوثيق حيث كشف الباحث من خلاله جهود الاستشراق في إخراج النص ونشره. وتناول في الفصل الثاني دراسة في الفن الذوقي والأدبي. وأما الفصل الثالث فقد خصصه عن عشر أبي الطيب (بين الفن والتاريخ)، وعالج في الفصل الأخير موضوع الاستشراق بين العلم والأيديولوجيا. وأنهى الحديث بخاتمة حاول فيها استخلاص بعض النتائج المتعلقة بالاستشراق والمتنبي على السواء.
