في حياة الأمم والشعوب رجال لا تظهر عظمتهم وقدراتهم الفذة إلا وقت اشتداد الأزمات واستحكامها. و(تشرشل) من هذا النوع من الرجال؛ فقد جاء إلى الحياة في ظل أسرة أرستقراطية، وقت أن كانت بريطانيا إمبراطورية عظمى، لا تغيب عنها الشمس. لكن على الرغم من أصوله الأرستقراطية، فإنه لم ينشأ مدلَّلا سطحيًّا، بل على العكس؛ فقد تربى تربية حسنة، وتلقى العلوم العسكرية وتفوَّق فيها على أقرانه. ولما أتمَّ تعليمه، بدأ يشعر بميل إلى المغامرات وحب مجابهة الأخطار؛ لذا أخذ يبحث عنها في كل مكان، فجاب الإمبراطورية البريطانية من (الهند) إلى (السودان) إلى (جنوب إفريقيا)، فتعلَّم من تلك المغامرات الكثير، حتى عاد إلى وطنه، وهناك بدأ يخوض مغامرات من نوع آخر؛ إنها مغامرات العمل السياسي بكل ما تحويه من مغامرات ومكائد وذكاء. وقد أثبت (تشرشل) في كل هذا أنه رجل من طراز خاص؛ طراز لا يعرف غير النجاح هدفًا، حتى في الحرب استطاع إحراز النصر فيها لأمَّته وشعبه، برغم المؤشرات الأولى للحرب التي كانت تشير إلى عكس ذلك. والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يقدم لنا (تشرشل) الأرستقراطي المغامر بكل ألوان شخصيته؛ فمن خلال ما جاء في الكتاب يمكننا أن نعرف (تشرشل) الإنسان، والمغامر، والسياسي، والمحارب، وكذلك (تشرشل) الظريف صاحب النكات والقفشات الذكية.
