بعد استسلام ألمانيا مايو 1945، قاد تشرشل مواكب المحتفلين بالنصر في شوارع لندن، إلا أنه- كما ورد في أحد كتبه- كان يشعر بغصة في القلب لعدم قدرته على الحد من النفوذ الشيوعي داخل أوروبا. وقد تبع ذلك، وفي أقل من شهرين، وحتى قبل استسلام اليابان، سقوط حكومته في انتخابات لم تكن موجهة ضده بمقدار ما كانت تعبيرًا عن رغبة البريطانيين بالتجديد بعد عشرين سنة من حكم المحافظين.
لم ينقطع تشرشل عن ممارسة السياسة بل تابع حضور مجلس العموم حتى تموز 1964، حيث تقاعد إلى أن وافته المنية في 24 يناير 1965. وقد أقيم له مأتم رسمي وشعبي ودفن فى حديقة الكنيسة الصغيرة التابعة لقصر بلاينهايم حيث ولد قبل تسعين سنة.
