شعر الحيوان من أجمل الشعر العربي القديم وأمتعه، إذ يطلعنا على عادات وطبائع مخلوقات من حولنا، ويكشف أسرارها وخباياها... وهو- من جهة أخرى- يثبت ثراء اللغة، وتمكن الشعراء، ووفرة أدواتهم، حيث يصفون شيئًا واحدًا، ويختلف كل واحد منهم عن غيره في التناول، فتجد حيوانًا مختلفًا لدى كل شاعر، وإن كان الإطار واحدًا... وفي ذلك تكمن عبقرية الشاعر العربي القديم. إن هذا الشعر كنز ثمين، لا يزال عامرًا بالأسرار والعجائب، زاخرًا بالنوادر والطرائف، ومن ثم فهو في حاجة إلى دراسات، تسبر أغواره، وتفك غومضه، وتحل رموزه.
وموضوع كتابنا هذا الذئب، ذلك الحيوان الوحش، الذي اهتم به العربي القديم اهتمامًا بالغًا، فجاءت لغته زاخرة بأسمائه، وكان منها المذموم والمحمود، ولا يزال الذئب إلى يومنا هذا مادة خصبة يستخدمها الشعراء وغيرهم رمزًا للصفات الخبيثة الدنيئة.. كما نجده في القصة على لسان الحيوان عند شوقي وغيره، كمجال ثري ينطلق الشاعر من خلاله ليبوح بمشاعره، آمنًا من العواقب التي تنتظره لو سلك طريق الإفصاح المباشر بنقد السلطة.
ولقد اقتضت طبيعة البحث الرجوع إلى أنواع مختلفة من المراجع، ككتب الحيوان، واللغة، والأنساب، والأمثال، ودوائر المعارف، والمعاجم اللغوية، ومعاجم البلدان، فضلًا عن استقصاء الدواوين الشعرية للأفراد، والمجموعات الشعرية... وغيرها، وقد جاء الكتاب في قسمين: القسم الأول: جعلته للذئب في القرآن، والسنة، واللغة، والشعر القديم من الجاهلية حتى العصر العباسي والأندلسي. فأوردت النصوص وحللتها. وجاء ذلك في بابين. وأتبعتهما بباب ثالث للدراسة الفنية لشعر الذئب، أما القسم الثاني: فهو معجم للذئب، تناولت فيه: أسماءه، وكناه، وألقابه، وأمثال العرب نثرًا ونظمًا، ثم تحدثت عن الذئب خَلقًا وخُلقًا..
