وتقوم نظرية التحليل النفسي على الرأي الذي يقول بأن الولد يكون تعلقه بأمه، وهي نقيضه جنسياً. وتعلقه هذا بيولوجي في أول الأمر، ثم يصطبغ بالصبغة العاطفية، فتكون الأم مناط كل رغبات الطفل وعواطفه، وهي رغبات وعواطف تنمو معه مع مدارج العمر ومراحل النمو المختلفة. وهي عند الميلاد ولفترة بعدها رغبات فمية تميز المرحلة الفمية من تطور الطفل النفسي والجنسي، ثم تكون شرجية في المرحلة الشرجية، ثم إحليلية، وبعد ذلك قضيبية، وأخيراً تكون تناسلية حيث تمام النضج الجنسي، فيتخلص الشخص من كل تعلق شهوي له بأمه أو بأي موضوع آخر سوى من يختارها شريكة لحياته وأماً لولده.
