إن هدف هذا الكتاب هو تعريف الآباء والأمهات، والمربين والمعلمين، وأصحاب الاختصاصات الأخرى ذات العلاقة، بخصائص النمو الجنسي، وبالمبادئ الأساسية لتربية الأطفال والمراهقين الجنسية.
فالفصل الأول "نمو الأطفال والمراهقين الجنسي -الجسدي- مكرس لمسائل النمو الجنسي-الجسدي في المرحلتين الجنينية، وما قبل المدرسية (منذ الولادة وحتى النضج الجنسي)، وفي مرحلة المراهقة. ونتعرض هنا للأشكال المختلفة من اختلالات النمو الجنسي-الجسدي.
وبما أن الاستجابات والسلوكيات الجنسية تعد جزءاً لا يتجزأ من الشخصية، فقد بحثنا في الفصل الثاني "نمو الأطفال والمراهقين الجنسي-النفسي" مسائل تكوين التعيين الذاتي الجنسي، والدور الجنسي، والسلوك الجنسي، من وجهة نظر النمو السيكولوجي للشخصية. كما أوردنا معطيات الأشكال المختلفة لاختلال النمو الجنسي-النفسي: كالاختلال التعيين الجنسي والهوية الجنسية في مرحلة الطفولة، والجنسية المتخالطة، والشذوذ أو الانحراف الجنسي، وكذلك اضطرابات النمو الجنسي-النفسي (تأخر النمو الجنسي-النفسي أو النمو الجنسي-النفسي السابق لأوانه). كما استعرضنا في هذا الفصل، المبادئ الأساسية لنظرية (زيجموند فرويد) في النمو الجنسي.
وقد مهدنا للموضوع الرئيس للفصل الثالث "التربية الجنسية للأطفال والمراهقين" بعرض تاريخي موجز لقضايا التربية الجنسية، منذ العصور القديمة حتى الآن، وزودنا هذا الفصل بتوصيات محددة ملموسة، متعلقة بالتربية الجنسية للأطفال والمراهقين. كما خصصنا حيزاً من هذا الفصل للاغتصاب والتحرش، والعنف الجنسي ضد الأطفال والمراهقين، وسبل الوقاية منه.
وأهمية هذا الكتاب لا تقتصر على الآباء والأمهات والأطباء، والمربين في مرحلتي الحضانة والمدرسة، بل تشمل حلقة واسعة من القراء، المهتمين بدراسة خصائص النمو الجنسي للأطفال والمراهقين، ومسائل التربية الجنسية عامة.
